UNLABELLED: Computerized hospital databases are acclimated for analytic and bread-and-butter research. In France, the hospital authoritative database, Programme de médicalisation des systèmes d'information (PMSI), could be an absorbing agency for anecdotic cases of corruption and assurance in hospitals.
PURPOSE: To appraise the adequacy of PMSI to assay cases of corruption and assurance (medicines or adulterous drugs; tobacco and booze not included).
METHODS: Cross-sectional study, from October 1 to December 31, 2008, in teaching hospitals of Bordeaux. All hospitalizations with an ICD-10 cipher accompanying to accessible corruption or assurance were selected. Cases were accurate by a board composed of three pharmacologists application acquittal summaries.
RESULTS: Among the 34 816 patients registered in the PMSI during the abstraction period, a absolute of 227 patients were pre-selected as abeyant cases; 21 patients, ailing for corruption or dependence, or complications of which, were included in the analysis. Mean age was 35 years. Substances active were buprenorphine (n = 8), benzodiazepines (n = 7), cannabis (n = 6), cocaine (n = 4), heroin (n = 3), amphetamine, ecstasy, morphine, codeine, and tramadol (n = 1, respectively); there was polydrug use in six cases.
CONCLUSIONS: The PMSI database can be advantageous to assay assertive cases of corruption and dependence. This pilot abstraction has been conducted at a bounded level; as the PMSI is accessible in all hospital settings in France, added assay could be done at the bounded and civic levels. Such abstracts could be a admired indicator to assay trends and appraise the medical after-effects of actuality abuse.
