The company sent me the Mega Bloks Domino Build Game for this review.
61eyVgAgt-L._SL160_

I personally like the Mega Bloks brand of toys, etc. as they are made to fit little hands so that they can hold them better.  My little guys ages 4 & 5 love to play dominoes. I like the fact these are big enough for them to hold onto easily and have fun animals on them too so they are easily identified  and helps them match too.

Children ages 3-6 years will have fun learning all about colors, numbers, matching and motor skills with the Mega Bloks Domino Build Game. It’s a great product for both boys and girls.

Itching to Dig in the Dirt Pin It

This last week, it’s been a Spring like weather event.  Makes me want to get out and dig in the dirt but I know we are not out of the woods yet, we still have the last frost to hit us and sometimes here on the mountain top, that has been in late April to early May.

I will be taking seed inventory though tomorrow (rather finishing it up) and seeing what we need as far as seed wise.

I want to grow and preserve as much as possible this year.

Dh told me yesterday that a fellow worker on another jobsite right now is supposed to be saving him some more of the extra long wood pallets. I hope he doesn’t forget. We’d love to have more of those to use on our little farm.

I’m anxious to order chicks too. Dh hasn’t decided as to whether to let me order or wait until they come at the local feed stores… I take a chance getting any there as well as whether I get pullets or cockrels.  I hate buying eggs in the store and I want to put up some pickled eggs for salads, potato salad, etc.  YUM!  I use the recipe from The Homestead Blessing series in the Homestead Blessings: The Art of Canning dvd by The West Ladies.  Best pickled egg recipe I’ve ever tried and it’s easy too!

We’ve had a little bad weather these last few days with 65 mph wind, (no damage here), thunderstorms, and a friend at church who lives out the road from us said they had hail this morning.  Spring is definitely around the corner.

I hope everyone is gearing up for a growing season in some form or fashion whether it’s container gardening, raised beds, or a traditional row garden, etc.   Nothing beats a homegrown tomato!

So go check them out and get your morning taste buds watering for some of their custom blends.

Herbs Are Not Just For Cooking Pin It

If you’ve ever thought that herbs are just for cooking, then think again!

We grow quite a few herbs for cooking, making tea with (mint, etc.) but also use some for medicinal purposes.

Examples:

  • I grow a variety of mints. One being chocolate mint that reminds me of the smell of a York Peppermint Patty. This makes WONDERFUL tea!  You can also brew the tea though and let it cool and use it in muffins, cupcakes, etc.
  • Lemon Balm is heavenly to smell but also makes a wonderful tea that you can use to make popsicles with that are not only cool and refreshing but calming.    If you like the smell of a lemony household cleaner, you can add a some leaves to your homemade cleaners just as homemade furniture polish, etc.  If you make a stronger tea with it, you can put in a spray bottle and use as an air freshener.   Just putting a bunch of the leaves in a bowl and setting them on your bathroom vanity gives you a nice “potpourri” type air freshener.
  • Sage is a cooking herb but can also be used to make tea to help with chest colds to get the mucous out.

The following list is from my previous post about our herb garden. Some of the herbs can be used in cooking (E = Edible), others are good for medicinal purposes (M). The E and M at the end below is the coding for you.

  • roses (petals are E) - see below
  • along with Indian Blanket Gaillardia in the center (not E or M just lovely to look at)
  • dill (E)
  • red yarrow (M)
  • white yarrow (M)
  • bee balm (E)
  • pineapple mint (E)
  • lemon mint (E)
  • French Tarragon (E)
  • Parsley (E)
  • Feverfew (M)
  • chamomile (M but you can use the petals to make a rinse for blonde hair)
  • Feather plant (aka Rooster Comb) = flower - bought on clearance for .25 a pack at Lowe's. They'll probably end up getting transplanted in a few days. (not E or M just lovely to look at)
  • Swiss Chard that was given to me (will transplant these to the main garden in a day or two once the remaining two raised rows are put in) (E)
  • lime mint (E)
  • chives (E)
  • peppermint (E)
  • Rue (M)
  • French Lavender (E) but we use it more for making scented sachets
  • Spanish Lavender (E) but we use it more for making scented sachets
  • Lemon Balm (E)
  • Spearmint (E)
  • Sage (E)
  • Rosemary (E)
  • Greek Oregano (E)
  • Golden Oregano (E)
  • Soapwort (neither E or M ... use blooms to make shampoo)
  • Chocolate Mint (E)
  • Catnip (E)
  • Apple Mint (E)
  • Pineapple Mint (E)
  • Pineapple Sage (E)
  • Indian Fig (cactus) - This belongs to the 9 year old who found it in the woods and transplanted to the herb garden (E)
  • Sorrel (E)
  • Italian Dandelion (E)
  • Silver Queen Thyme (E)
  • Cilantro (E) (if you let this go to seed, the seeds are what is called Coriander ... so you get two in one.... an herb and a spice
  • Stevia (E)
  • another variety of Thyme (E)
  • another Rosemary plant (E)
  • purple basil (E)
  • Basil (E)
  • Caraway (E)
Rose petals can be eaten. I've made rose petal jam from them before. The only one of us who liked it though was the 7 year old. LOL The rest of us said it was too perfumed. Hubby said it was like eating a jar of perfume. Other than that, it had a sweet taste.

If you’d like to learn more about herbs and how you can use them, you can take a free ecourse from Learning Herbs.  I really liked this ecourse and with it being free, it’s affordable to all who want to learn more about herbs. Be sure to check out the rest of their site: Learning Herbs for lots of great information and sign up for their newsletter too as you’ll learn more about herbs in those as well as get great recipes sent to you (one of which is the recipe for the Lemon Balm Popsicles).  Take their online herb walk too. Not only are there how-to’s such as How to Dry Herbs but also recipes for edible as well as medicinal purposes, and much more. If you click on the How to Dry Herbs link, look down the right hand side for a lot of links to educate yourself more about what you can use the herbs for and how.

I could not find a link to all of their past issues, but I was able to find them:

I save all the ones they send me because it is a continuing education course for me.

Here’s a link to their back issues of Herbal Branches which is different from the Herb Mentor News links above. But you can find some more articles and news type issues links here: HerbMentor News - HerbMentor, by LearningHerbs.com

They have a WildCraft Game that our family would like to have but it will have to wait.

Wildcraft Board Game

Which brings me to the other aspect of herbs… or rather every day plants found in your yard or the wild  or what some people call “weeds”. Some of those “weeds” are very useful actually.

Did you know you can make coffee from chickory root or dandelion root?

How about cookies made with dandelion blooms, or jelly made with violets or even rose petals?

Ever made mullein oil?  We have. The oil is great for healing purposes for cracked, dry skin, etc. Mullein (link to image)  is a common plant that many don’t know though. It has fuzzy leaves and in some places if it’s not cut down by mowers, it will have a tall stalk with yellow flowers close to the stalk on it.

Stinging Nettle or as our children call it… “pokies” are common in many places. We detest them coming up in our garden area but the leaves can be washed, dried, and ground to a powder to make a poultice to use on a compress to stop bleeding. It helps with coagulation of the blood to stop it.

I hope this post has inspired you to learn more about herbs and wild plants.  As with any herbal remedy, etc. use caution and use in moderation, etc. especially if you’re taking any prescribed meds as some can interfere with them.  Also if you are picking plants from the wild, be sure you know what you have before ingesting it, etc.  There are poisonous plants out there.   One of the best field guides we have ran across (and have) is the Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide. It has color photos which makes identifying the plants easier. In addition to the color photos, there is a brief description of the plant, where it can be found, and uses for the plant along with identifying if it the plant can be used for cooking, medicinal, etc. or if the plant is poisonous as in the case of the poison Hemlock which looks similar to the Queen’s Anne Lace (look for that dot in the middle before even touching the plant) that you can eat the root like a carrot.    The Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide is pricey new at the link provided but check out your local used bookstores. We found one there for a really great price. I think it was around $5.

OAMC (Once A Month Cooking) Doesn't Have to be Overwhelming Pin It

I originally posted this over on WeUseCoupons but thought I would share this on my blog too:

OAMC or Once A Month Cooking as it is known has a variety of methods when it come to filling up your freezer with ready meals.

Option 1: OFor many OAMC consists of cooking a lot of meals in one day and freezing them. They do all the cooking in that day from chopping the veggies, frying the meat, to assembling the entire dish.

Option 2: For many others OAMC consists of a weekly OAMC version. They may cook/fry chicken one week, beef next week, etc. and assemble those dishes accordingly and put those in the freezer.

Option 3: Then there are those who are like me, who do OAMC as more of a double or triple batch of something they are already making and put the extra in the freezer. Although it doesn't happen with every meal, I do make double and triple of batches of ones I can and freeze those for use another day. If I'm not too strapped for time, I can make up large batches of soups and use my pressure canner and can those up. I do pinto beans like this as well as potatoes too. I try to cut up the veggies (carrots, celery, etc.) when I bring them home and put them in containers in the fridge vegetable drawer for quick meal prep time.

There are websites to help you with bulk cooking ideas such as:

There are books on the subject:
These Make a mix ones are my personal favorites as I can make up convenience mixes such as muffin mix, cornbread mix, spice and seasoning mixes, and more along with making some basic meat mixes to have on hand for quick meals

Which OAMC Option do you do?

Do you have any OAMC sites or books to share?

REVIEW: Pringles are for Lovers? Pringles Chips? Yes! Recipe included for brownies! Pin It

Valentine’s may be over, but showing someone you love them should be an every day affair.

Whether you tell that special someone that you love them, surprise them with a nice little gift, spend some quality time them, or treat them to a special meal… showing someone you love them should be on you to do list every day.

Below is an original recipe for PRINGLES Brownies, created by professional Chef Kyle Shadix. The irresistible blend of sweet and savory is not only one of the popular dessert trends of 2011**, but will be a great treat to show that special someone you are thinking about them.

PRINGLES Brownies

  • 6 ounces baking chocolate, unsweetened
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1-6.41 ounce can of Original PRINGLES, regular or  1-5.71 ounce can of Original Reduced Fat PRINGLES, regular
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350 F

2. Line 13x9-inch baking pan with foil, and spray foil with cooking spray.

3. In a glass bowl, microwave chocolate and butter on high for 2 minutes.  Stir until chocolate melts.

4. In a stainless steel bowl, mix sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well mixed.

5. Pour in butter chocolate mixture and mix well.

6. Empty PRINGLES and flour into a food processor, and puree until very fine.

7. Empty flour mixture into chocolate mixture and mix well; add nuts to distribute.

8. Bake for 30 minutes, and cool.

If you’re like me, you’ll like the sweet chocolate and salty duo taste that these brownie pack.

Remember brownies don’t have to be for a special occasion, but can be for a pick-me-up gift for a friend.    For an inexpensive and delicious gift, cut the brownies into heart shapes (or other shape of choice), place them back in the emptied and cleaned Pringles can, then wrap with paper and tie with a bow.

Frugal Alterations, Recycling, & Repurposing Pin It

Many of my readers as well as my personal friends know that I love to reuse and repurpose items when I can.  That doesn’t stop at cottage cheese containers, sour cream containers, glass jars, etc.  That includes clothing as well as sheets I’ve used to make curtains, pantaloons for the girls, etc.

I found this great Tutorial: Repurpose a women's skirt into a little girls' dress and couldn’t wait to try it out. I browsed the freebie boxes at a local thrift store and found a nice denim skirt. It was a size 16 and too short for my liking but I remembered this tutorial and brought it home (FREE). I love looking through those freebie boxes to see what I can find to repurpose or recycle (buttons, zippers, bows, etc.) as well as find clothing we can wear or I can alter.

100_8905

I cut the skirt at an angle up the side seams, leaving the bottom hem area alone as the decorative edge was too cute to cut off.   I saved the cut strips to use those as the should straps.

Although our girls don’t wear sun dresses, I made this as a jumper so that the youngest girl (age 6) could wear it with a cute blouse under it. I crossed the straps in the back to keep them on her shoulders better and added a sweet little red bow trimmed in gold to the front of it I salvaged from something previously (a blouse, sweater, or something).

I think it turned out super sweet and she loves it.

100_8916

The same day I found the skirt to use for the jumper, I found a very pretty (but too small for me) denim dress.   I started thinking I could alter it somehow so I could use it.   I thought of a canning apron and thus that’s what I made from it.  The waist ties were on it but I removed those and moved them to the back opening.  Using some scrap pieces of denim, I made two large pockets for it and the upper back “tie” for it.  Voila! I now have a full coverage denim canning apron for only the cost of thread and a little bit of time.

100_8918

100_8919

Our middle daughter (age 8) loves to wear aprons as I do and loves pink.  I’ve had this cute little pink and white polka dotted, butcher style apron for some time (again I think it came from those freebie boxes). She always grabs this one if it’s clean but complained that it wasn’t fitting her right. I just hadn’t had the time to work on it until today.

So I cut the apron up the middle section away from the waist sides leaving the white trimmed area intact. I then moved those two pieces further up the length of the apron and sewed them back together. I then cut the bottom just a tad longer than the rest in the middle portion so I could fold it over to make an even hem.

The resulting apron is a smaller version of the original style and now fits her much better. She loves it and couldn’t wait to tie it on.

100_8917

I also shortened the sleeves on a very pretty white blouse I found in those same freebie boxes to make it fit the 8 year old better. It was a petite size 3/4 but it fit her in the body portion but was too long in the sleeves. So I took the cuffs off, cut the sleeves down and put the cuffs back on. Now she has a very pretty, silky white blouse to wear under her jumpers.

100_8925

Since I already had the sewing machine and serger warmed up, I sewed velcro on more of the reusable Swiffer Wet Jet reusable cloth pads I have been making using washcloths I picked up at Walmart for $4 for a pack of 18.

I found the tutorial here: How To Make Your Swiffer Less Evil. A Tutorial but since I was using a washcloth, I  just folded over the washcloth and sewed around the open edges as well as the folded over edge then sewed on the velcro. You can get the rolls of velcro at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and even Lowe’s Home Improvement stores.

If you own a Swiffer Wet Jet but hate buying those expensive bottles of cleaner, here’s how to open and refill that bottle with your own solution whether it’s with a bigger bottle of store bought cleaner you dilute as shown in the video or a more organic version with white vinegar, etc.! Talk about a money saver!   This DOES INDEED WORK!  I did this to mine and filled it back up. Thanks to jen2swt at WeUseCoupons for sharing the link to this how to video with the members there.

I was blessed to be able to get a swiffer wet jet for next to nothing with store coupons and mfg. coupons a couple months ago so I wanted to keep those savings going and this video and the reusable pad tutorial helped me to keep on using my swiffer at a lot less cost.

Often Overlooked Safety Traps Put Children at Risk Pin It

Child Safety Article

Author: Melissa Kay

Each year in the U.S., more than 2,000 children under the age of 14 die as a result of a home injury, according to Safe Kids USA, a non-profit organization.
“Parents often underestimate their kids’ abilities and overestimate their intelligence,” says Chrissy Cianflone, Director of Program Operations at Safe Kids USA. “They think, my child’s too smart to do X and they often don’t realize how strong their kids are.”

There are so many things to think about as you safe-proof your home to protect small children that it’s easy to overlook important risks.

Most people are aware of common safety measures like covering your electrical outlets, keeping your child away from hot stoves and watching them like a hawk as they bathe, but there are other dangers that don’t readily come to mind.

1) Cords from window treatments – According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, one child a month between the ages of 7 months and 10 years dies from strangulation or is severely injured by near strangulation from the loose strings or cords on window blinds and shades. A window covering advertised as cord-less does not mean that it is truly cord-free. Kenney Manufacturing’s new Truly CordFreeTM Roman Shades use a twist wand to raise and lower the shade and inner mechanisms to eliminate all strings and cords. www.kenney.com

2) Dressers and other tall furniture – Dressers are dangerous because they are heavy, not always well balanced and can be pulled over if a child tries to climb them. An unsteady toddler trying to climb doesn’t understand that a heavy object can topple. Invest in brackets found at home improvement stores or baby stores like Babies R Us to anchor dressers, TVs and wall units. Keep heavier items on lower shelves or in lower drawers, and don’t keep remote controls or temptations like candy or toys on top of furniture. www.BabiesRUs.com

3) Window screens – Never rely on a window screen to keep children safe from an open window. Screens are for keeping insects out, not for keeping kids in. Invest in heavier child-proof window screens, which cost under $30. Don’t place furniture by a window, potentially creating a climbing opportunity and the associated risk. http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml00/00126.html

4) Open medication containers – Be vigilant about your child’s safety away from home. A risky situation can exist when a child visits a grandparents’ home where pills may be left within their reach. Vitamins and OTC medications can be extremely dangerous to children. Remind family members and caretakers to buy pill bottles with child safety caps and keep all medicines and pills out of your child’s reach, preferably locked up.

5) Under the Kitchen Sink – More than 100 children ages 14 and under die each year from unintentional poisoning, according to Safe Kids USA. In addition to household cleaning supplies, pesticides, cosmetics, art supplies, paint products and alcohol are dangerous to children. To avoid accidental poisoning, store these products up high in locked cabinets. It is a good idea to install a safety latch to keep the doors to under the kitchen sink secured at all times.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: 365 Everyday Value Complete Body Cleanse from Whole Foods Market Pin It

I recently had the opportunity to try the 365 Everyday Value Complete Body Cleanse from Whole Foods Market.

I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that all was great with this cleanse.

I mean come on… it was a cleanse!!  Cleanses do some weird things to you. lol They clean you out!!  ‘Nuff said.

582

Seriously though this was a really good cleanse regime as compared to some I’ve done in the past.  I did get a little heartburn with this one during the first week at night so I’m not sure what that was all about as it’s not happened before with other cleanses. I’m thinking it may have been the new garlic capsules I was taking though as I switched to taking the garlic with my morning vitamins and the heartburn stopped. So not sure what was causing the garlic but just changing the time of day I take a certain vitamin seems to help issues like that. Yes, my body is weird like that.

The Bar Method’s Pregnancy Workout DVD & Onesie Giveaway! Pin It

Have you ever noticed how dancers are so toned and fit?  I know that many probably think that a dancer is weak or whatever, but I have to disagree. Look how strong their leg muscles look! They have to be strong in order to perform as they do for as long as they do.

The creators of  The Bar Method has just introduced a new workout that is geared towards the expectant mother.

The Bar Method’s Pregnancy Workout DVD

205 Master teacher Lee Potter in her third trimester with twins  adds her own special wit and playfulness to the Bar Method’s pre-natal workout, a long-standing and popular class at its flagship studio in San Francisco.  Lee leads you through this 45-minute long series of gentle, safe and challenging moves, including free-weight work, thigh exercises, standing seat-work, and abdominal strengthening exercises performed while propped up on pillows.

Lee’s fellow performers are Hannah Blue, co-owner of the Downtown San Francisco studio and Lauren Dunning, a teacher at the Downtown San Francisco studio, both appearing in this DVD in their second trimester. As Lee puts it, this DVD “will help you feel strong during your pregnancy, will assist you in delivering your baby, and will snap you right back into shape.” Retail: $20.00

Our 2011 Homestead & Farm Plans Pin It

Now I know some who will scoff and say… “Oh you only have 5 acres how can you be a farm or homestead?” or they call us a “hobby farm”, or a “mini farm”.

I can tell ya that growing our own fruits and vegetables, raising animals for food, as well as tending to the property etc… ain’t no hobby!   It’s a way of life!   It can be done in the country or city too!

So whether I call our 5 acres of mountain top… “Foggy Mountain Farm”  is really no concern for someone to scoff and tell me it’s not a farm because we only have 5 acres.

I don’t care if you live on 2 acres and have most of your property in edible plants or if you live on 20 acres with cows, pigs, etc….. if you want to call it a farm… go right ahead. You’re the one doing all the work and raising food for your family.

Besides, there’s even folk growing much of their own food right in the hubbub of the city like the Dervaes Family of Pasadena, CA.

Oh and I have some who think that since I lived in the city for a few years that I’m a city girl.  (those few years were plenty more than I cared for believe you me) Honey, I’m the furthest thing from a city girl. I grew up in the country, back in a holler down between two ridges, and one mile from the foot of a mountain. Daddy used to say they had to pump sunshine in to us. I was not only a country girl but a tomboy to boot and a Southern girl too.  I went fishing, hunting, and worked on cars with my Dad and brothers but I also know how to forage in the wild for berries, nuts, and some other plants for medicinal purposes, cook from scratch,  can up those extra maters, peaches, etc. as well as how to cook a good pot of soup beans and bake cornbread to go with ‘em.

So don’t judge a book by only a chapter or two, you need to dig a little deeper to learn more about the whole story.

So now that I have that all out of my system, lol …

Our 2011 Homestead & Plans

Chickens:

  • Order some pullets from the supplier if we don’t decide otherwise. We were thinking about buying some from a local farm store but you take your chances there on whether you get pullets or cockerels. I can only identify the pullets from the Black Star variety so I have to take my chances on all others unless the store orders only pullets. I guess we do need at least one rooster though as I want to continue to grow the flock.
  • clean out the coop and spruce it up in advance of the new chicks coming to their new home.  We’ll have to check it out good for any predator entrances – holes that snakes or rats could get in or in our case mainly… raccoons who like to climb the fence and wiggle through the top and get it.

Ducks:

  • Not sure we’ll replace the two ducks we had a couple of years ago but it’s a consideration (maybe just not this year). They are shall we say “messy” things. Worse than chickens.  I did like those big duck eggs though. Nice eggs to use in baking.

Rabbits:

  • At one time, we had three rabbits. I do not foresee us getting rabbits again.  Our oldest boys didn’t know and fed them golden rod (it’s poisonous to rabbits) and before I saw them and stop them, the rabbits had already ate some of it.  Now that’s not the reason we won’t get rabbits again.  We won’t be eating them is the reason why.  Sure I grew up eating wild rabbits (they make some tasty meals) but hubby doesn’t want to eat them. So unless the animal is edible or useful, it doesn’t get a place on our farm.

Goats:

  • This may not happen this year, but I would like to have goats again. At one time, we had four goats. We had a coyote kill the momma and her two babies. We sold her brother (which was a whether at the time we got him). He was so lonely he followed us around. He got out one day  and came right up on the porch and into the house! He wanted to be with us.  Needless to say, a goat was not going to be staying in our house, I don’t care how lonely he was!

Cows:

  • Would love to have a bottle calf to raise and fatten up for the freezer but we’ll see.  I would love to have a Jersey for milking but that is wishful thinking right now. Jersey’s have a high butter fat content in their milk that makes it not only good for drinking but butter making too.

Cats:

  • We’ll continue to love and feed the two ornery creatures that we currently have as long as they continue to stick around and catch mice and in case of one of them… snakes.  Princess Mia kills snakes. A cat that kills snakes and mice is welcome around this homestead any ol’ day.  We have coyotes in this area that seem to like cats as appetizers. We’ve lost several cats over the 8 years we’ve lived here.

Gardens and Other Edibles:

  • Expand rhubarb bed
  • pick up some more  horse manure for the growing areas (aged horse manure is good fertilizer!  - aged cow manure, goat manure, and chicken manure is too)
  • Go through seeds and get those ready to start, etc.
  • Buy and plant more fruit trees and possibly a few nut varieties.
  • Finish getting the grape trellises up --- yeah we’re only 6 years… ok, almost 7 years behind on doing this.
  • Finish up the main garden redo with putting in the rest of the raised beds
  • Finish putting up the fence around the main garden of raised beds – trying to deter the deer from eating my garden
  • expand the growing area (we’re going towards more edible landscaping)
  • trim tree limbs from out around the wild blackberries and wild grapes we’ve found on the property so that we can start taming them
  • harvest more wild edibles – fruits, nuts, etc.
  • put up more homegrown fruits and vegetables as well as wild harvested ones either by canning, drying, or freezing – one of these days I might have a root cellar but digging through mountain rock is a whole nuther thang! That’s what ya get when you live on top of a mountain.
  • plant more herbs and thin out some of the mint patches – I am being overrun by chocolate mint. lol It smells heavenly and makes wonderful tea but man can it grow and grow and grow and grow…
  • finish the walking paths in the main garden
  • locate a source for more wood chips (free preferably as I obtained last year and they even delivered) to put down in the walking paths of the main garden.
  • do the heavy layered mulching again in the herb garden with newspaper and grass clippings to cut down on the weeding and to build the soil up.

Other:

  • Finish the front porch remodel (well that’s dh’s project but I hope he finishes it this spring)
  • buy and install two screen doors to help the air flow in the house during the summer months (trying to cut back usage of the a.c and electricity)
  • buy and install a whole attic fan (again trying to cut back usage of the a.c and electricity)
  • replace windows in the house – leaky old things. Hubby is looking at the ones that tilt inward for easy cleaning for me. I hate having to climb on a ladder to clean a window.
  • finish the hall bathroom remodel (serves as guest’s and children’s bathroom)
  • new carpet or wood flooring in the living room and hall. The carpet that is in here now is old and worn out. It was here when we moved in 8 years ago. It’s time to let it go (ok past time).
  • finish the dining room remodel (which if the below addition is started and completed it will be the new school room)
  • finish the kitchen remodel (which if the below addition is started and completed it will be the new dining room)
  • I wouldn’t mind one bit if hubby would start the new addition consisting of a larger kitchen and a large walk in pantry/storage room and a larger laundry room– we’ve only been talking about it for the last 8 years or so. lol  --- of course if it all goes into place my stockroom which was to be my laundry room would then become my craft room according to hubby.  He wants my scrapbook stuff and sewing machine out of the living room.
  • do a couple of minor house repairs
  • fix the well pump
  • get hubby to cut down a few more trees on the property to season out for fall for next winter’s wood supply
  • maybe start cleaning up that “trash pile” that the previous owners pushed and piled up with a bull dozer apparently to make a big old mound of junk and stuff back in the woods. Thankfully you can’t see it most of the year but you know it’s there anyway just taunting you.
  • keep on keeping on with my monthly menu planning, homeschooling, day to day household upkeep, frugal endeavors, and staying on top of the inventory (which should be easier to do now with a scanner and database)
  • I wouldn’t mind trying to catch up on some sewing that I’ve been putting off, scrapbooking, and a very long in the making cross-stitch that I started … oh 13 years ago! lol  It’s a cross-stitch of the Lord’s Supper I started. I have it about half done and just put it down one day and never finished it.

That should keep us busy enough all year. I’m sure that the list may grow over time though… honey do list always do.

REVIEW: Santa Cruz Organic’s line of chocolate syrups Pin It

Who doesn’t love chocolate syrup drizzled over ice cream or stirred into a tall glass of ice cold milk?

Well make that chocolate syrup organic, and you’ve got my ears perked up even more.

Chocolate Syrup?

Organic Chocolate Syrup?

Oh yeah baby!

Santa Cruz recently introduced their organic line of chocolate syrups.  Available in Mint Chocolate, Chocolate, and Raspberry Chocolate.

When the box arrived, the children and I were as excited as if it was Christmas morning. We are all chocolate lovers in this house.  We could not wait to have our taste test.

They all received rave reviews with each of us having our favorites. The Mint and Raspberry flavors won the most votes with Raspberry being the ultimate taste test winner.

The first thing I said after tasting the raspberry one was… “ooooh, I wish I had a piece of cheesecake to drizzle this one over!”   I love cheesecake with raspberry sauce drizzled over it. I could just imagine this raspberry one drizzled the same way as the taste is a wonderful raspberry flavored chocolate that reminds me of the raspberry sauce itself.

So if you’re a chocolate lover and like chocolate syrup, flavored or regular, look for the Santa Cruz organic line of chocolate syrups at your favorite grocer today.

REVIEW: ACE brand products from 3M Pin It

Winter is still hanging around but the newness of Spring is coming around the bend.

Whether it is winter, spring, summer, or fall, no one’s first aid kit should be without a few products to be prepared for as well as to treat ailments.

A few products to consider having in your first aid kit include items such as the products from the ACE brand  from 3M, shown in at right in the photo.

ACE offers  braces, supports, ice/heat packs, wraps, sports tape and much more.
100_8886

I was sent the three items shown above to review.  I received a reusable Cold Compress, a reusable Hot & Cold Compress, and a roll of Self-Adhering Bandage in 3” width.

Now I admit that I didn’t even know that there were reusable compresses available. I thought they were all the use one time type thing and throw them away.  The frugal side of me likes knowing that I can reuse these!   The mother in me likes knowing that I have things such as these on hand for use when one of my courageous and adventurous children sprain an ankle or pull a shoulder muscle. Of course having a husband who works hard in the construction industry may just like that hot & cold compress for his own aching muscles.

As a matter of fact, my husband was complaining his lower back was hurting him. I heated up the Hot & Cold Compress and placed it in the bandage pocket included with the compress then put that on his lower back. The warmth from the compress started to ease his aching muscles in his lower back.

The reusable Hot & Cold Compress is a good thing to have on hand if only for use on his back or other sore muscles but I have a feeling it will get used for more than just that. We are happy to add these items to our arsenal of first aid supplies.

To learn more about the ACE brand from 3M, below are some relative fact sheets. (You should be able to click on them to make them bigger if need be.)image
