After Christmas Clearance = Gifts on the cheap Pin It

After Christmas sales usually brings about some deals that are great to snatch up and put away in a closet, etc. to use for gifts throughout the next year whether it’s for birthdays, anniversary, valentine’s, or yes, even Christmas.  I try to do this every year as it helps me budget wise as well as time wise because I’m not having to rush out to the store to buy a last minute gift and I’m buying on clearance thus saving me from having to pay full price.

I usually try to go the day after Christmas to see what I can find but didn’t make it out this year due to icy roads… didn’t even get to church on Sunday for that reason.

So after church on Wednesday, I popped into Wal-Mart to pick up a couple of things I forgot the other day and decided to go back to the games section to see if the U-Build Monopoly was still on the shelves at $5. There was only one left but I snatched it up. To make the deal sweeter, I had a $3 coupon I printed from here, thus making the game only $2!  You can print the coupon twice.  I’m going to check a couple more Wal-Mart's to see if I can find some as these will make great, inexpensive gifts to have on hand for any birthday parties the children may get invited to.

519lsTgvbCL._SL500_AA300_

 51DZX7MNT6L._SL500_AA300_

I also picked up a Very Hungry Caterpillar game for $5 and a Stratego game for $4. No coupons on those but they were 50% off so not too bad of a deal. 51b31DM71FL._SL500_AA300_

I haven’t decided whether I’m going to hold onto these games to use as a gift for a child’s birthday or go ahead and give them to the children now. Decisions. Decisions.  oooh, I could even make up little cards for them and put them in their workboxes for them to play with a sibling. hmmm  I just made my decision process worse.

Don’t forget to check out the clearance sections as well as after holiday (not only Christmas but Easter, Thanksgiving, etc.) clearance sections  in the stores whether it’s Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, CVS, Target etc. for great deals you can put back for gifts.  When applicable, you can even use coupons on those items thus saving you even more.  An example right now to look for would be the AXE holiday gift sets.  Those should be 50% off and there was a $3 off coupon in a recent insert. That could make these very inexpensive and would make a great gift.

Gifts don’t have to be just items like the above, think about making up gift baskets too (themed ones are always a hit).  Rite-Aid has clearanced CoverGirl makeup for 75% off. There are various items such as lip liners, blush, and more.   Use the $2.50/2 CoverGirl coupon from Sunday’s P&G insert and get some really great buys on makeup that you can either use for yourself or make up a great basket for someone for their birthday, valentine’s etc.  Put in some chocolate, a makeup bag and/or makeup brush set or even some makeup applicator items such as sponges, eye shadow wands, etc.

Think outside of the box. Don’t be afraid to check out the clearance. Buy gifts ahead of time or create baskets of goodies to use as gifts. In the end, you’ll  save some extra money as well as save yourself some time!

Fun & Educational Finds on The Cheap Pin It

After feeling under the weather for almost a week (still not 100% back to feeling ourselves), the children and I ventured into town yesterday to do a little after Christmas shopping while enjoying our week off from school.

We didn’t find much in the 50% off after Christmas stuff that enticed me to buy to put back for gifts (will keep watching though as the clearance percentage goes up and the prices will be less) but I did find a few goodies we could use in our homeschool.

100_8791

At Dollar Tree, we found 4 different dinosaur themed 100pc puzzles and a US Puzzle.  Not pictured are two bags of colorful pom poms I bought to restock our craft box and also to make magnetic pom poms with. I love looking at Dollar Tree for Educational Finds. We’ll use the magnetic pom poms with pages I downloaded for free from Erica at Confessions of a Homeschooler as well as other sites she posted links to.  Erica has some awesome ideas for preschoolers Ideas that helps them with motor skills and more. If you have a preschooler or soon to be one, check her site out for some great ideas!  I have printed quite a few things from her site to use with my children.  I laminated them for extended use. I recently bought a box of 100 9x11-1/2 laminate sheets from Amazon for $1.05. I used $15 in Amazon Gift Certificates earned from Swagbucks and got free two-day shipping by using Amazon Mom.  The price for 100 laminate sheets at Amazon is fabulous considering that a pack of 50 laminate sheets cost $13.88 at Walmart.

I also bought a pair of white ear buds for our little netbook at Dollar Tree.  We used to have a few different sets of headphones that the children could use for the computers, etc. but over time, they were broken, etc.  I only bought one pair to see how well they worked and they are really good for only a $1. I’ll be going back to get a few more pairs (or the headphones – haven’t decided) as we really do need a few more pair with this many children.

After Dollar Tree, we popped into Walmart where I found that ABC/123 Foam Puzzle set (shown in picture) for .50! I bought two of these and will be using one of them for a birthday present for our grandson who turns two in July. It’s all about thinking ahead and buying the deals when you find them people. It saves money and time.  The foam puzzle tiles interconnect and the letters and numbers themselves can be popped out. It’s two sided as well so this is like 3 puzzles in one and will be great to put into the youngest two children’s workboxes. Which reminds me, I really need to update my blog with pictures of what we use for workboxes now as long gone are the baskets and ziploc baggies we used to use.  I’ll be using the dino puzzles in the workboxes too.

I also found those cute little, colorful clips on clearance for $1.50 and the oversized push pins on clearance for $1.00.

Not pictured but I bought two little video handheld games (palm size actually) that were on clearance for $1.00 and the little boys stayed happily occupied with those.

Why didn’t it dawn on me earlier than this morning I don’t know… but while reading this post of Sheri’s, I remembered that I still had my little cassette tape recorder/player from my paralegal days (I used to use it for dictation from the attorney I worked for). This thing is about 15 or 16 years old and it still works!!

100_8798

The children had been using an old “boom box” that was my husband’s to listen to the stories on tapes we have.  Well now I can put this tape player, a tape, and headphones in one of their workboxes and they can color while listening to one of them.  I think they were excited as I was when I told them about it this morning.  Yes, the little things amuse us!

These two items weren’t bought yesterday but rather last week at Rite Aid when they had their Christmas toys on 50% off clearance sale.

100_8795 100_8796

The Stick-ums are kind of like Bendaroos.  I only paid $6.49 for these.  The children can use them to make things with as well as we can use them to form letters, numbers, and shapes using printable pages fromConfessions of a Homeschooler or you can purchase the Wikki Stix Cards to use.  I looked at Amazon to see if they have them and guess what they do and cheaper than what I paid for them!  The Stick-ums are only $5.95 at Amazon and are the same count from what I can tell.  Oh well I got them cheaper after you take into account the shipping on those from Amazon (unless you have Amazon Mom which you can sign up for free and keep for 3 months without any charge and that will give you free shipping on items).

The Amazing Volcano was only $4.99 and will be a great science project sometime.  I may just hang on to this one until we get to a portion in the Mystery of History curriculum that is about a volcano in history (Pompeii or other). Amazon has the Mystery of History but if you have a used bookstore in your area, check there as well as used curriculum sales.  I bought ours at the used bookstore for $20 and it had the CD of worksheets, etc. with it.

The Apron Pin It

Using some fabric scraps from old curtains and sheets for the ties and binding, a salvaged bow, as well as repurposing a dust ruffle for the apron itself, I made a few waist style aprons for some of the younger girls at church as a present from my two youngest girls.  I wrote this poem to go with the apron as reminder that even a piece of cloth can serve more than one purpose.

 100_8753

The Apron

Some say I am just a piece of cloth with strings attached,
with no other purpose than to protect from a spill.
I have much more of a purpose than that.
I am not perfect nor ever will be because as you see…
I will get dirty from splatters and spills...
I will be used to wipe the tears of little ones who have fallen and scraped their knee…
I will be used to wipe my owner’s own tears when she cries over a loved one whom she wants to see saved...
I will get stained as she works with her hands…
I will be used as a hiding place for a little one that is too shy…
My strings will get torn and stretched as a little one hangs on to me, but there will be a day when I wish they had never let go…
Why do they say I am just a piece of cloth with strings attached with no other purpose than to protect from a spill?
No, I’m not perfect but I serve a purpose far greater.

Keeping your closet organized Pin It

For those that know me in real life, know that I am an organized person. Hubby says I’m borderline OCD on that.  If something is not organized, it drives me a little bonkers until I fix it.

One of the areas I like to keep organized is my clothing that hangs in our closet.

I have my clothing separated into seasons and colors. What I mean is that all my blouses are hung up in sets. All white blouses with short sleeves are together, then the mid-length sleeves (if any), and these are followed by the long sleeved white blouses. I continue this with any other blouses I have, keeping colors together whether they are red, pink, etc.

100_8727

I have the three jumpers I own hanging in front of the blouses. Behind the blouses are my skirts. Denim first, followed by my “church” skirts. I don’t wear pants now and haven’t in about 7 years or so.  The last items on the rack are my coats – long winter one for church, one I use for working outside, and an everyday coat.  That’s my clothing organization in a nutshell.

I don’t have a lot of clothes anyway and only keep what I can wear.  Stained clothing is only kept if the stain can be hid under one of my jumpers. By keeping my clothes sorted by colors and sleeve length, etc. I can easily go to my closet and match up a blouse to a skirt or jumper really quick.

Now I do admit that I need to clean out  some of the other things in there but haven’t had a chance. We are hurting for storage space in this house so the “old” school records and books are in our closet.  I need to go through those and toss the ones we no longer need to keep.

Free Version as well as a paid version!

If you want to buy a version other than use the fee one – the paid has more options, etc. than the free version, use coupon code: christmas to save 25%.

We bought a paid version so we could have a CD of the game and put it on a few different computers as we have 6 children still at home and 3 of those are playing this game. That makes it easier to accommodate the ones who want to play the game at the same time.

Lots of great homeschool resources can be found  at CurrClick.com including FREE ones as well as paid ones. They are also having a sale until December 13th.

Be sure to sign up for their free weekly newsletter so you get the scoop on the sales, new free resource offers, and more.

CurrClick
One of my favorite sites is NotebookingPages.com.
If you have NEVER checked this site out, you need too. Not only do they offer Free Resources in a variety of subjects from ABC pages to History and more, but they offer sets that you can buy such as sets for Nature Study, a study on the 50 States, and more.  We actually use the Nature Study set for our Nature Journals.

We used the 50 States set last year in our homeschool co-op study on The United States and this year, we are using many of the history pages for our Mystery of History course we are using.  We did splurge and buy the CD with all the sets and pages that NotebookingPages.com offers. I think we bought it when they were offering a 50% off sale and it has been a wonderful investment.

Molly has listed several free homeschool helps over at Econobusters.com.

While you’re there check out the rest of the site for free and frugal ideas on a variety of subjects. If you like what you see, click on the banner here –> to sign up for a membership wherein you’ll get the Monthly Digest available each month. There is a nominal fee for the membership.

A fun way to learn Multiplication Tables! Pin It

My children use this to help them learn their multiplication tables. It's a video game that you can download to your computer.

My two oldest boys were struggling with the tables and after finding this online, I downloaded it. They know their tables now due to the game and still ask to play it. I actually have a little card I made up for it that I put into their workboxes along with a timer for 30 minutes for it.

Now my 8yo dd who is in 3rd grade is playing it. She is picking up the times tables quick too.

Timez Attack is the name of the program.

Free Homeschool Planner with Purchase at TOS Magazine store Pin It

I got this in my email and wanted to be sure y'all saw this great deal.

Get a One year sub to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for $7.95 and get a free planner to boot.

QUOTE:
Free Planner - Merry Christmas to All of Us

Dear Friend of TOS,

This year at Christmastime, we'd like to ask you to make a consideration. TOS Magazine has been blessed with over 22,000 paid subscribers. Our hope is that by January 2, we will make our goal of having a minimum of 25,000 subscribers. Believe it or not, it helps us to keep our costs down to you when our advertisers are so willing to come on board with us, but they only do so because we HAVE paid subscribers.

Numbers are big with them, and we understand why. With the economy the way it is, everyone is having to make smart buying decisions. You as a homeschool family are also carefully considering your purchasing decisions; money is tight. Is that a smart buying decision? $7.95 for a full year of the homeschool magazine that brings encouragement and help all year long - if we have helped you in any way, will you help us? Please consider buying several subscriptions for friends, families, your library or doctor's office at the super low price of $7.95. And thank you; it truly will be a Christmas gift we won't forget if we can make that goal.

Recycling & Repurposing worn out or outgrown things Pin It

Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I like to recycle things and use them another way or repurpose a clothing item when I can… even if the item is beyond wear it can be cleaning rags many times.

Well I reading the December issue of Molly’s Money-Saving Digest and stumbled across this blog mention at the end of one of the articles: New Life, New Purpose .

I clicked on the link and boy am I glad I did!  It’s a link to A Blog About Recycling and Re-purposing!    I found some great posts on making a SHIRT DRESS using an outgrown dress shirt and a t-shirt, as well as how to make a NEAT, CHEAP TIE FASTENER, how to make a DENIM POT HOLDER, and more.

So if you like to recycle and repurpose items, check out that blog!

Red Ink + a Favorite Jumper = Disaster Pin It

While trying to clean up my desk area, I laid a few things on my lap not knowing that my red ink pen had leaked onto the desk and underneath the stuff.  I ended up with a few splotches of red ink on one of my favorite jumpers.

I thought I was going to have to demote it to a work dress for housework and farmwork but decided to see if I could get it out since it hadn’t been laundered yet.

I mixed up one part rubbing alcohol with three parts liquid dish soap and added in one part of hair spray and one part of nail polish remover.  I put it into an almost empty dish soap bottle and shook it up.

Now the test came.  I squirted it on the splotches and used an old toothbrush to scrub it under running warm water.

I am happy to say that ALL the ink splotches came out of my jumper!  I am so thankful!    I saved the rest of my homemade ink remover in the bottle and labeled it with a marker just in case there are more accidents with ink pens… which probably will be with our size household.
