REVIEW: Your Baby Can Read

Your Baby Can Read is a set of DVD's that is an early learning reading program that is geared toward teaching infants ages 9 months to 2 year old toddler.

Basically, this program teaches the child by showing him or her the written word while he or she learns the sound of the word as it is spoken to them. This is more of "reading by sight" than by learning the phonics of the letters that make up the word. That being said, I do wish that I had this program available to me with my oldest daughter when she was an infant.

Maybe she wouldn't have had such a struggle with learning to read. She was in public school up until the 4th grade and we honestly didn't realize how far she had "fallen through the cracks" in her school work as the school she had transferred from prior to the school she was in when we pulled her out to homeschool her. The previous school didn't tell us how badly she was behind in not only reading but math. The school she transferred did find the problems and was trying to rectify them by keeping her back a grade but we decided to homeschool and give her the one on one she needed. I think this program could have actually been of benefit to her when she was an infant. It could have gave her an advantage I think.

I have home-schooled all my children since 1999. I taught my now 9 year old and 7 year old boys to read. I am currently working with my 5 year old daughter who is eagerly wanting to read. This DVD set could have made things easier with the two boys had I had it back 4 years ago. Now the younger children (ages 3, 2, and 18 months) have the opportunity to use this DVD program. I can't wait to see the progress they will be making. Just after a few viewings, they are saying words I hadn't heard them say before. Look out early reader groups, here we come!

According to the website, there is a age frame that is considered a "window of opportunity" that is between the ages of 3 months and 5 years, that a child is apt to learn the written word more easily. As my husband says, "they are little sponges". The children absorb so much and rather quickly too. I can see that in my children. So I agree that that age frame is ideal to introduce a reading program such as this. They will learn the spoken word as well as sight word. Did you know we read more by sight than by sound? Sounding words out are imperative for someone to learn the phonetic sound of a word but many people read by sight. In my opinion, this program teaches a child more on the "reading by sight" than on the learning by phonetic sound. I don't think that's entirely bad but I like for my children to know the phonetic sounds.

For more information on this program, visit the website for Your Baby Can Read! where you can not only learn more about this innovative program, read an Interview with Dr. Titzer, but you can also view a demo of how the program works.

A special thank you to the people at Your Baby Can Read! and to Parent Bloggers Network for the opportunity to review this DVD program. I'm thankful for the DVD player on my laptop to play the DVD's too as we don't own a television or DVD player for that.

This program is available at on their web page as well as at Amazon!

I had my daughter watch these when she was a baby. I borrowed them from the library. I really liked them but I stopped getting them over a year ago. I should start again.
