Something Magical This Way Comes

There is something magical about the still of a summer night, a small insect, an empty mayo jar, and children.

Those four elements bring backs memories of chasing "lightening bugs" or fireflies as a little girl growing up in the hills of Upper Northeast Tennessee.  I grew up in the country. Our house was many miles from the nearest grocery store and mall for that matter. We learned to find fun in the things around us because our parents liked to shew us outside to play and they would be outside too either shucking corn, snapping beans, or whatever.

I can recall many nights that two of my brothers and I would chase lightening bugs until we became so tired that we would literally fall down.  I wonder now if it was my parents' way of  tiring us out so we would sleep.

Now, I'm a Mom and I get to see the joy of chasing lightening bugs through the eyes of my children. There is something special about seeing the faces of my children light up with glee when they catch their very first lightening bug and then watch them mesmerized by the blinking light as it sits in the mayo jar where it was not so gently but hastily deposited.

Days go by so quickly and soon turn into months then years that have gone by.  Why not savor the little things from your childhood again. For a night, become as a child again, grab a mayo jar and go catch a lightening bug.  High Five your children when they catch one of their own.

You're never too old to have a little fun in your life!
