Ok, every parent can probably say that "my children amaze me" or "my children are extraordinary" and rightly so as each child is unique and the apple of their parent's eye.
Like many mothers and fathers too, I'm very proud of my children. They each have their own little quirks that make them who they are. They each have their own likes and dislikes as well as each is unique in how they learn. I will be reviewing a book soon here on my blog that is titled, Your Child's Strengths. which is written by Jenifer Fox. Each of my children has a strength that is their very own. Oh I'm not talking about how physically strong they are, but rather their strengths when it comes to other things.
I am the mother of seven children, four boys and three girls. Each of them have a learning style that is unique to them.
Ashley, my oldest, is 19 now. When she was still doing school work, she would learn better by the hands on method than she would by the book method. She learned by doing more than reading.
"Trey" or as he is asking me to call him now, Ronald (his given name), is 9 and is my little Einstein. That boy loves to read! He learns better my reading than by doing. He can learn by doing but it's secondary to his reading skills. I will never forget the Christmas Play at church a couple of years ago in which he was 7 years old and had to read quite a few verses for his part in the play. He was in a class with boys that were at least 10 and older. He read better than most of them did! I was shocked to say the least. After the play, I had two parents come up to me and commend me on his reading. I told them that since he learned to read, he always has a book in his hand. As I type this, I can hear him reading a book to his younger siblings.
Jakob is my 7 year old. He loves to read but he has to have his hands doing something while he reads or while he is being read to in order for him to remember what he has read or heard.
Emma is my 5 year old and is doing really well with her phonics. I would not be surprised if she is reading by herself very soon. She loves to "faux read" books and I can already tell that she will learn by reading more than she will by hands on.
Grace is my 3 year old. She is a very bright toddler who can't wait to do school work like her bigger sister. I was going to wait for a little while to start her on some phonics books but she is begging to begin so we will start those soon. I can't tell what type of learner she will be but she loves to cut things out and create things so maybe a hands on learner.
Nathan is my inquisitive 2 year old and all around "get into everything" child. He likes to see how things works, what's inside something or underneath or on top of. I am constantly getting him down off the shelves... which thankfully hubby have anchored to the wall securely.
Thomas is my sweet 16 month old that is babbling like crazy and amazes me daily with a new sound or "word", which I may or may not always understand.
Each of my children are different in their own right but also alike in many ways and they amaze me daily with new feats and accomplishments.
Ashley completed a Civil War era work dress completely from scratch with a pattern that was given to her. The dress looks amazing and I hate to say, but I don't think I could have even accomplished that sewing feat. She even carved out a wooden knife from a piece of wood for her 7 year old brother to use as part of his costume for the masquerade party tonight. I am very proud of her accomplishments and have rightly told her so as well as begged for her to sew me a dress like hers.
I can't wait to see what the future holds for each and everyone of my children! The future is in their hands and it's my job as a parent to help mold them to meet their goals.
This post is written in part for The Parent Bloggers Network as well as in preparation for the book review of Your Child's Strengths which is written by Jenifer Fox.
