I have said a few times here on my blog that one of my favorite sayings comes from the Depression Era... "Use It Up, Wear it Out, or Do Without".
Well that slogan has become a mantra for a new one for me this year in my goal of eating and living healthier.
I'm determined to cut out the eating out. Yes, we may be frugal but we still succumb to eating out once in a while. Those fatty fast foods are making us fatty unhealthy people.
Exercising will come in to play for us to get our workout to boost our metabolism as well as or overall health. My weight needs to get under control so I can get off my blood pressure medications.
Doing without the junk foods such as soda will be a major factor. I don't need the caffeine nor the sugar that is in those, but it's one of my major weaknesses. According to my doctor, I shouldn't even drink them because it causes my heart rate to increase. This was told to me after spending a week in the hospital in November 2006 for a-fibrillation.
My husband wants me to cook with more whole grains and organic or home-grown vegetables. We started using wheat for our bread about 2 years ago. My husband bought me a Bosch Mixer and a WonderMill (formerly known as a Whisper Meal). Although wheat has become a staple in our household to make bread and I have pastry wheat to make flour for cookies, cakes, etc., I still find it hard to cook with. Not that it's hard to use but the fact that I'm still just very unfamiliar with. I have found myself reverting to using white flour on occasion and do use it to make things when we have to take something to church for a fellowship meal. I don't want to make someone sick who may be gluten intolerant or have wheat allergies.
We "try to" garden every year, but the heat of the southern summers here and my hatred for weeding can be detrimental to our garden. We get produce but it's not enough in my opinion.
I think my hardest thing about cooking healthier meals is finding the recipes that we like and are not only easy to use but are economical.
Did you know that some grocery stores have sections on their website that help you with this?
Kroger's offers:
- Hundreds of recipes, including nutritional information
- Guidance on the selection, preparation, and storage of fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood
- Food preparation safety guidelines
- there is an entire section on Healthier Living with nutritional information, diet and fitness information,
- and more
This may be just what I need to reach my goal to lose weight this year.

It's easier said than done, that's for sure. I like whole wheat, but my family doesn't, so I compromise with a half-wheat half-white combination much of the time. They're willing to meet me at that point. My bread machine and my crockpot are my favorite appliances.
