October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
My Mother is a 27 year survivor of breast cancer. She was first diagnosed in 1980. That diagnosis was followed by a mastectomy and a year later, another mastectomy. I remember seeing my mother physically exhausted from the surgery, the treatments, etc. I remember her crying because she no longer "looked" like a woman. Through her tears, I do remember her laughing years later as she received "fake" boobs. She was laughing and saying... "FINALLY I can have smaller ones." She was a big chested woman. She tried to find the good things in the matter after the ordeal was such a trauma to her and to us.
With her history, I am at a higher risk due to my her and my family history. My Aunt, Mom's Sister, died of cancer while in her 30's.
My sister had to have a lump removed.
So I take precautions to do self-exams regularly and have had two mammograms within the last 3 years... time for another one.
Not all breast cancer is detectable with self-exams though.
